MICHAEL MATIS (painter)

Biographie:

Né en Suisse en 1946, orphelin et après une jeunesse difficile, il a l’opportunité d’entrer à l’Ecole d’Art de la Chaud-de-Fonds. Quatre ans plus tard, il en ressortira diplômé.

En mars 1961, une rencontre capitale changera sa vie. Lors d’une conférence, il rencontre le célèbre artiste-peintre Georges MATHIEU et sera, dès lors, impressionné par l’Abstraction Lyrique.

Il ouvrira un atelier dès 1967 et participera à plusieurs expositions collectives et personnelles.

En 1975, participant à une délégation de peintres suisses à Paris, l’Etat français lui achètera deux toiles qui seront destinées à être exposées à Beaubourg (Centre Pompidou).

1976 verra Michael MATIS cesser temporairement de peindre suite à d’importants problèmes de vue.

le 24 septembre 1985, il rencontre à nouveau Georges MATHIEU avec lequel il se liera d’amitié.

Dès 1985, sa vue s’étant stabilisée, il reprend son activité de peintre et participera à nouveau à des expositions à Genève (Suisse), Obidos (Portugal). Il exposera également à Shanghai (Chine) suite à un récent voyage en Asie dont il reviendra très impressionné, particulièrement par les artistes locaux tels que Tad Chen, Du Xiang Wei, Lee Sun-Don et Zhangmiquan entre autres…

La peinture de Michael MATIS est inclassable: extrêmement personnelle, mais toujours empreinte d’une démarche philosophique.

Il essaye de transcender l’Art oriental et occidental et nous propose un art informel et sobre, un pont entre plusieurs cultures.

Peu usé par le « système », sa personnalité de solitaire le fait communiquer uniquement au travers de son art si particulier.

Pour Michael MATIS, l’Art n’est qu’un modeste et éphémère témoignage de l’Humanité.

Biography:

Born in Switzerland in 1946, orphan, he lived a difficult youth but he had very young the opportunity to be accepted at the Academy of Fine Arts of La Chaux-de Fonds. Four years later he was full-blown graduated.

In March 1961 a capital event occurs in his life: a meeting with the famous painter Georges MATHIEU during a conference, and from that time he was very impressed by the abstract Art.

In 1967 he opened a workshop in Geneva and took part to several collective and solo exhibitions.

In 1975 he participate in Paris to a delegation of swiss contemporary painters where he was noticed and discovered. The french State will buy two paintings which were then exposed in Beaubourg (Centre Pompidou).

In 1976 consecutvely to important health troubles (eyes illness), he ceased to paint temporarily.

On te 24th of September 1985 he meets again Georges MATHIEU with whom he begins a friendly relationship.

In 1985 his eyesight has stabilized, he will then resume his work as a painter and will participate again, both in Geneva (Switzerland) at Obidos (Portugal) and Shanghai (China), thus following a recent trip to Asia which he returned very impressed, especially by local artists such as Tad Chen, Du Xiang Wei, Lee Sun-Don and Zhangmiquan among others.

The actual panting of Michael MATIS is unclassifiable. He developed a personalized and always philosophical art.

He tries to transcend the Western and Eastern arts, proposing to us an informal and sober work, a bridge between a few cultures.

Not tired and used by the « system », depends of his lonely personality, he communicates only through his art.

For Michael MATIS Art is only a modest and ephemeral testimony of Humanity.
